Diary of an English gentleman, identified only as "Mr. Stein," describing his travels across the United States from July to Nov. 1876. He traveled from London to Liverpool, then by boat to New York City and then by train going north into Canada and then west in the U.S. through Chicago until arriving in San Francisco and then back to Boston. San Francisco descriptions include a nighttime visit to China town and comments on the hardworking Chinese and the resentment of them by Californians. Also included are comments on the African-American staff working at the Palace Hotel. The back of the diary includes some hints to traveling in America, the advantages and disadvantages of America, opinions of American food and drink, and a list and index of places visited. Small black and white photographs are pasted onto some of the pages in the diary showing scenes from Saratoga Springs, New York including a horse racing track, Saratoga geyser, and Saratoga Lake.
